Costume Closet, installation view, 2019, wigs, robe, acrylic, canvas, Celluclay, fabric, steel
Costume Closet is an ongoing exploration of how labels are ascribed to children and signify a lived reality. Space is created for the viewer to question the labeling of self and of others through the act of play. An alternative space brings scrutiny to traditional identities in order to imagine what could be.
In her research on play pedagogy Bertha Payne substantiates the claim: “Characters are tried on, and in so doing the children enter into a comprehension of them, consequently into sympathy with other persons. They are thus forming ideals, and living them”.
